A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed – Essay, Meaning, Expansion

January 16, 2021 by Karan Kapoor Leave a Comment

A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed Essay: Friends, by definition, are those that hold your hands in both good and bad times. Some friends stick to us only when the conditions are favourable and turn their backs when faced with a dark storm. True friends help us and support us irrespective of our situations. They do not expect anything in exchange or return. Friends who are there for us when we need them are most trustworthy.

Essay on A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed

A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be. – Douglas Pagels

A friend is someone who we spend time with and are fond of. All of us have our own definitions of friendship, but one thing that remains constant is that friends are people who are there with you to share not only your joys but your sorrows as well. Krishna and Sudama, Joey and Chandler, all provide us with great examples of true friendship. Friendships are relations that we are not obliged to continue but choose to make. Sometimes, they prove to be as thick and strong as blood relations. The proverb, “A friend in need is a friend indeed” means that a true friend is that, who stands with you and supports you even in the most adverse times. This can be better understood with the help of a story.

Once two friends from a poor village decided to try out their luck in the city. They set out on their journey. Then came a deep, dark forest where they heard a frightening roar. One of the friends quickly climbed up the tree nearby, leaving the other helpless. A bear appeared almost immediately, and the other friend had no time to move or run. So, he lay on the ground, closed his eyes and held his breath. The bear came near him and smelled him. Thinking that he was dead, he left and went along.

After the bear was nowhere to be seen, the friend who had climbed the tree came down and asked his partner what the bear was whispering in his ear. The clever friend realising the truth replied that the bear told him not to be friends with selfish people and who leave you in difficult times. Moral of the story? Difficult situations show you who is your true friend and who is a fake one. Never be close to those people who hold your hand in merry times but leave you stranded in times of deadly storms.

Who is a True Friend?

It is said that you have earned riches in your life if you have made even one real friend in the course of it. You might see that your father is still best friends with his desk partner from school. How do you suppose that such friendships last so long? They exist because they have been tested by time and the people committed in it never give up on each other.  True friendship is when both the people involved in it are comfortable and happy in each other’s company. It knows all the secrets about the other person which not a single other soul is aware of.

It is when you feel proud and happy for your friend when he or she achieves something significant in their life. It is not always about praising your friends and telling them how good they are. At times, you even need to give them an encouraging reality check. It is your duty as a true friend to bring them to the right path in case they deviate or are misled. Friendship doesn’t look at race, gender, size or tradition. It just happens.
