Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born in Tamil Nadu in the temple town of Rameshwaram on 15th October 1931. Though born in a poor family, he was a brilliant child who manifested exemplary character in his career. His father Jainulabdeen use to manufacture boats and rent them to local fisherman and also worked as an imam of a local mosque, and his mother Ashiamma was a housewife.
At an early age, Kalam sold newspapers to supplement his financial condition and aid his father. He had a strong zeal to learn and spent hours on his studies. The most favourite subject he adored and loved was mathematics. He used to engross himself in practising every problem and finding solutions. Dedication and curiosity were the powerful traits that led him to dwell the scientist in him.
He attained BSc degree from Saint Joseph College, Tiruchirappalli and later joined Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). Furthermore, he upgraded his knowledge by joining the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in 1958 and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1963. APJ Abdul Kalam was christened as the missile man of India and the Jewel of our land for creating missiles like Agni and Prithvi for India.
Dr. Kalam won the presidential election in the year 2002 with an electoral vote of 922,884. He succeeded K.R Narayanan and served as 11th President of India and served India from 25th July 2002 to 25th July 2007. He was affectionately called as the People’s President by the citizens of India.
After his tenure ended, he became a visiting professor of the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. Moreover, he was appointed as the chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Thiruvananthapuram. Also, he was a lecturer and worked at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.
He was a carrier of love, peace and compassion and always approached life with an optimistic outlook. His writings, speeches convey his adulation and respect towards his motherland India. Despite the adversities, he never gave up the courage and kept on marching ahead by working hard and achieving his long-cherished dream.
He was a remarkable writer who inspired many through his written books and speeches. The book Wings of Fire is based on his life achievements and lessons which received great recognition worldwide. The government also honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 1981 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 for his commendable work with ISRO and DRDO.

Good Morning honourable guests respected Principle, teachers and my dear friends, I welcome you all on this particular occasion held to pay homage to a renowned scientist, politician and a great teacher of India who is known as the Missile Man of the nation. We have assembled today to pay tribute to his remarkable contribution towards India.
APJ Abdul Kalam was born on 15th October 1931, in Rameshwaram town in Tamil Nadu. His father built and rented boats to the fisherman, and his mother was a housewife. Despite being born in a low-income family, he received the best education and nurtured through values and morals taught by his parents which turned him into a modest and humble human being.
Since childhood, he was fond of air and watching birds fly in the air. Therefore he grew keen and developed an interest in becoming an aeronautical engineer and thus joined aeronautics. With the support of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, Professor Satish Dhawan and Dr Brahm Prakash he was able to launch missiles like Agni and Prithvi.
He considered them the best teachers and acquired knowledge of leadership. He was appointed as the President of India in the year 2002 and later was awarded Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan by the government for his extraordinary work in the field of science and defence. Dr Kalam was a bachelor and never intended to visit abroad.
