Water is life. It is one of the most crucial elements required for the functioning of all life forms on Earth. Humans, animals, plants and all other living creatures depend on it. Our planet is called the blue planet because of the presence of life-sustaining water.

We can access this universal solvent from large water bodies like oceans, rivers, streams, seas, lakes, springs, groundwater, and glaciers. There are multiple uses of water. On a day to day basis, we utilize it for various purposes like drinking, cooking, cleaning, etc.

Almost 70 percent of Earth is made up of water. Despite its abundance, only 3 percent of the world’s entire water content is fit for use. The human body regularly needs water to stay hydrated. Moreover, we can survive without food for several weeks but not without water. Water is a non-renewable resource that needs to be used wisely.

Lately, man-made activities have been continuously exploiting and polluting this resource. Our carelessness has diminished the available clean supply of water. A shortage of water is a grave issue that demands our attention. And to do that, we must realize its value and try to conserve it. Along with that, we must come up with innovative techniques for better replenishment of water resources. Let us further discuss a few more things about the importance of water.

Importance of Water

It is difficult to imagine a world without water. The absence of water will turn the earth into a dead place. Barren lands with no vegetation will diminish the greenery. The transition of one season to another will ultimately come to an end.

The marine life would come to an extinct. This means we won’t have any more fishes, whales, seals or dolphins. All humans and animals would be gradually wiped out of this planet. Water is a great gift bestowed to us by God. It saves us from all kinds of misery. Here are some of the practical uses of water. It will help you better understand how precious water is in our lives.

Study reports suggest that approximately 70 percent of the human body is composed of water. All our cells, tissues, and organs use water to perform the body’s basic functioning. Water regulates our body temperature. Drinking water can cool down our internal temperature when our body gets heated up due to some activity.

We continuously lose water in the form of respiration (breathing), perspiration (sweating), and digestion. Therefore, we need water to re-hydrate ourselves by either eating fruits that contain water or drinking enough fluids. Domestic use of water cannot be ignored. Good hygiene is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Without proper sanitation, we are prone to diseases.

Water is used for keeping ourselves clean. Activities like brushing our teeth, taking a bath, mopping the floors, cleaning the bathroom and using a steam iron also need water. Water is extensively used for agricultural practices. The livelihood of a farmer depends on it. A regular water supply is needed while irrigating the crops and rearing the cattle.

When waterfalls on the turbines (used in hydro power plants), its force is large enough to propel them and produce electricity, thermal power plants and other industries utilize a lot of water for cooling their heavy machinery.

Besides, there are several water sports which entertain us. Swimming, surfing, water skiing are such activities that need a good space of water for people to enjoy themselves. Boating is another fun sport that requires large water bodies.
