Essay on Guru Purnima 2021: A famous Hindus festival celebrated on the full moon day of Ashadh month dedicated to sage Vyasa is called Guru Purnima. Guru Vyas is revered as a great leader who compiled the 18 Puranas, Mahabharata epic and Srimad Bhagavatha scriptures. The role of a teacher is essentially significant in every person’s life. Cultural programs and performances from different cultural groups mark the events of the day. The festival is celebrated by Buddhists and Jains as well.

Guru Purnima is the festival celebrated in July or August by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. The students, disciples and followers celebrate it to express their profound gratitude and love towards their teachers and gurus. It is celebrated based on the Hindu calendar when the full moon day of Aashaadha. The word Guru is divided into two-Gu, meaning darkness and Ru meaning removal of darkness. So when combined together, the word means someone who eradicates darkness and ignorance.

It is believed that by worshipping guru, the disciples attain the initiation of the guru. As stated in the Hindu texts, the festival of Guru Purnima is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Guru Vyas. He is the legendary author of Mahabharata, Puranas and Vedas. He is considered to be immortal according to the Hindu tradition. The festival is also known as Vyasa Purnima. Moreover, in Hindu mythology, it is also mentioned that on this day, Lord Shiva rendered the knowledge of yoga to the Sages.

Several disciples commence the day by performing pooja in the temples followed by classical songs, dance, havan, kirtans and recitation from Bhagavad Gita. Many people call priests at home and perform yagna. Schools and colleges arrange events and program where students offer their love and respect to the teachers and thank them for their lessons. Various gifts in the form of flowers, bouquet or sweets are given to the teachers or guru.

The Buddhists celebrate it by honouring Gautam Buddha, and Jains celebrate it to mark the teachings of Vardhaman Mahavira. In short, if a disciple fails, the master or the guru is the one who encourages to stand-up. India is the only country which regards guru to the highest level as they understand their real value. The child is the future of the country mastered by his/her guru.
