We cannot deny the importance of self-study, but at some point, you have to take coaching to give a professionalistic approach to your preparation. The learning methodologies and the exam format have been changed in due course of time. You need to get in hand practice of the modern learning practices and techniques to fulfil your dream of becoming an IAS officer.
The coaching centers have the former IAS officers, prestigious government officials, bureaucrats and subject experts in their faculty who have years of expertise and a seasoned approach towards teaching and nurturing the aspirant of their capabilities.
These coaching institutes are equipped with every aspect of the latest learning methodologies, which makes the student stay ahead in the upcoming competition.
Apart from better learning techniques, the coaching centers have the mentors and guides who encourage and motivate the aspirant to perform better in the exam. It has been seen that the students are generally frustrated due to extreme exam pressure.
These coaching centers keep on conducting motivational lectures and personal interaction sessions with the aspirants to boost their morale and keep them on track.
Points to be noted before enrolling in any IAS coaching institute
1. Track record of the coaching center
You can use the Internet and interact with the past students to know the track record of the coaching center. This will help you to know how many students are enrolling every year and how many of them get selected.
2. Location of the coaching institute
If the coaching center is near to your home, you can study freely. Even if the coaching center is not nearby your home and you have to relocate to some other city, make sure that there are PG’s nearby where you can avail the residence and can study with similar minded people.
3. Batch strength
You should be very careful about this. Check the student to teacher ratio. Just ask the batch strength at the reception. The ideal batch strength ration should be somewhere between 1:30 to 1:50 (teacher: students).
Faculty is the soul of every coaching institute. You must enquire about the faculty, especially the teaching staff over there. Ask about their qualification and teaching experience too.
5. Motivational environment
This is the much desired factor. If you are not comfortable with the environment, then you can’t study with concentration and peace of mind. A great role is played by the teachers as well as the coaching center’s ambience to keep the students motivated and stress free.
Fee for these coaching institutes is generally high, so better ask them about any concessions or installments, scholarship etc. Most of the coaching institute take a scholarship test in the beginning and offer discounts to meritorious students.
7. Study Material
This is the most important thing which you should enquire. Cross check that the study material is prepared by experts and contains all the updates which are revised by UPSC.
8. Mock test
The main reason for joining any coaching center is the mock test feature which they provide. There is no point in joining the coaching if they do not offer the mock tests. Mock tests help you analyse your preparation level and your strong and weak areas.
These coaching places design your road map for success in preparation for India’s most prestigious examination, i.e. UPSC. But the key players are still the same, which is your hard work, positive attitude and determination. Best of Luck!
