Importance of Water Essay in 500 Words

Water is one of the most important substances on Earth. It is required for the basic functioning of all the living organisms in the world. Water builds up 60 percent of the body.

It contributes to all the functions like respiration, digestion, etc. Water is found in every cell of the body. All chemical processes like temperature regulation, oxygen exchange require water.

There is a large quantity of water available on Earth. It exists in lakes, ponds, oceans, etc. 71 percent of the Earth’s surface contains water. But the drinkable water constitutes only 2.5 percent. Due to the increasing population, the demand for water is exploding, causing a water predicament.

India uses a primarily large amount of groundwater to meet the necessity of water in the country. Niti Aayog reports predicted that 21 Indian cities would run out of their groundwater by next year. It is essential to understand the importance of water in our daily lives and utilize it carefully.

Most of the underground is utilized for agricultural purposes. This causes a decrease in groundwater levels. Water is required for household purposes like cleaning, bathing, washing, etc.

Significance of Water

We cannot think of life without water. It is a necessity of all living beings for survival on this planet. Our bodies use water for all the fundamental processes in the body.

Our cells, tissues, and organs use water to perform body functions such as temperature control, oxygen transportation, etc. It keeps our body well maintained and healthy.

Hydration is very important for the body. Otherwise, it causes dehydration in the body. Our body loses water generally in the form of sweat during physical work. It keeps our body temperature normal. Drinking tons of water helps in preventing dehydration.

Water helps in excretion of waste through urination. It boosts digestion by breaking down the food more easily. It helps in absorbing all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Sufficient water keeps skin more hydrated and more glowing. It slows down the ageing process.

Water is used for commercial purposes in hotels, offices, restaurants, etc. It is used for domestic purposes involving drinking, cooking, washing, etc.

It is utilized for industrial purposes such as cleaning, manufacturing, and other processes. It is used in dairies, farms for Livestock water usage.

How is Water getting polluted?

A major percentage of the waste is thrown away into rivers and oceans, thus making them polluted. Drinking water is very limited. But still, the water is hugely contaminated.

Though the agricultural sector uses the majority of the water, it is the greatest source of this water pollution. The huge amounts of fertilizers, insecticides, wastes, pesticides are added for the growth and prevention of the crops.

When it rains, the fertilizers wash away from the soil into water bodies. It degrades the quality of water heavily with chemical and toxic substances affecting the water animals also.

As rapid industrialization and urbanization are taking place, industries are dumping their waste into rivers and oceans. It is one of the main causes of ocean pollution. Discharge of Radioactive wastes is another big issue.

It can cause cancer due to the presence of highly toxic substances. Plastics are vastly found materials in oceans. Being non-biodegradable, it affects the fishes, etc. for a long time.

It also causes the death of animals. Sewage disposal is another hazard in infecting the water. Sewage transmits harmful viruses and bacteria, causing harmful diseases.

Why is Water Conservation important?

In such a populated country, it is important to take essential measures to save water and use it wisely. Only 1 percent of the freshwater is accessible to humans, and the rest is in the form of glaciers.

If we continue exploiting the water and using it ridiculously, we might end up with all the usable water. Without pure water, all humans and animals will die in some days. Therefore the saving of water is highly essential. Saving water will ensure pure water for future generations.

We are overusing all the water resources if we continue at this rate, most of the population will sustain from water shortage. We want water for cooking, brushing, and other daily purposes. Water helps plants to develop and helps in achieving ecological balance. If everyone does a little bit, it will add up to a whole lot. It is important for the survival of the ecosystem.

Saving water can save a lot of energy, thus reducing energy and water bills too. It will decrease carbon dioxide emissions.

How to Save Water?

Though water is a renewable source, it can become a non-renewable source due to the increasing population. It is essential to take some initiatives seriously.

Prefer a bucket over the shower during the bath. It will save tons of water. Turn off the water while brushing and shaving. Use the water used in the kitchen in watering the plants. Keep a regular check on toilets, faucets, and pipes. Fix all the leaking taps.

Flush less, use a bucket instead. It saves more water. Do not clean the surroundings with a pipe. Collecting rainwater will help in conserving water. Rainwater harvesting is the best method to use rainwater.

It comprises collecting and using rainwater by purifying it through a system. Rainwater can be stored in buckets and containers. It can be utilized in flushing, watering, washing vehicles, etc.

The Government has launched a lot of initiatives to conserve water. Indian states have also taken some serious steps to curb the usage of water. The ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ was initiated by the Government to focus on rainwater harvesting, renovation of water bodies, water sanitation, and afforestation.

Avoid cattle grazing in the farms. Constructing dams on rivers will ensure precipitation and greenery. Ganga Action Plan was also launched to clean the holy Ganga because it contains toxic chemicals and pollutants.

People can live without anything but cannot live without water. We should realize the importance of pure water and not take it for granted. Therefore water should be preserved and stored in safe places to avoid it from being polluted.
