Knowledge Is Power Essay in English – 500 Words
“An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest” ~ Ben Franklin.
The presence of knowledge is crucial in our life. It is certainly considered one of the most powerful entities in this world. Knowledge can be utilized to serve both positive and negative needs. It has the capability of creating lives. At the same time, it has much potential for destruction as well. Knowledge is the sole differentiator between humans and animals.
We should use it for productive purposes like helping our community and nation. When it is used to assist a negative plan, it can harm others and have disastrous results. To know more about the powerful aspect of knowledge, let us first understand what it means.
What is Knowledge?
Knowledge can be referred to as the state of understanding or awareness. This understanding can be in the form of facts, wisdom, information, or skill. And it is usually acquired from a previous study or experience in life. Knowledge helps us become well-informed citizens. It is an ability that we can use to gather useful information and then make rational decisions based on it.
The concept of knowledge is so vast that there is no end to it. It keeps on increasing with time. Intellectual processes like perception, logic, and communication are crucial for gaining knowledge. It plays a significant role in the advancement of science, art, philosophy, and literature. Knowledge is indeed power. It has helped us achieve mighty things. A person with adequate knowledge can rule an entire nation.
Is Knowledge Power?
“Knowledge is Power” is one of the most popular phrases in time. It was first used by Francis Bacon. The proverb means knowledge is all-powerful, and it can conquer the entire world. It empowers us with strength and makes us fearless. The more knowledge you gather, the better you will be in controlling the situations of your life.
Knowledge and Power always go hand in hand. One of the classic examples is the story of America. What made America the most powerful nation in this world? We should be thinking about why it became a superpower in the first place. America became a superpower because of its surplus natural resources and inventive measures.
These inventions and resources were not a representation of luck. Rather, these people established a strong foundation of education. Education made them experiment. And experimentation promotes knowledge. This benefited their society and made them powerful enough to compete with the rest of the world. Hence, it would be correct to say that knowledge provides power, and power passes on knowledge.

A story that proves Knowledge is Power
There was an intelligent and hard-working girl named Carmen. Reading books was one of her hobbies. This also was the reason why she would excel in academics. One fine day, her class teacher asked the students if they had any power. An athletic champion raised his hand to answer the teacher’s question. He said “Ma’am I do have power. It is in my legs which make me capable of running so fast”.
The teacher went on and asked if someone else was willing to share some answers. Carmen started speaking, “Ma’am, I feel I have the power of knowledge. The books I read and the lectures I attend help me gain wisdom and knowledge.” Hearing her words, Carmen’s classmates started making fun of her. They thought reading books and hearing lectures were boring.
The teacher ordered the class to remain silent. She called Carmen and told her that Knowledge is indeed power. She praised Carmen in front of the entire class. And she told others that they would soon realize the importance of knowledge. The following day Carmen discovered something remarkable on the notice board. An annual quiz competition was to be organized in about a month. This was her chance to prove her words, right!
Carmen wasted no time and rushed to the office. She enrolled in the competition and started preparing for it. Her days were occupied by the general knowledge textbooks. She devoted herself to acquiring every ounce of knowledge from these books. On the day of the quiz, Carmen won the competition. She was given the title of the “Most intelligent student of the school”. She also won a full scholarship for her two years school program.
Her classmates were astounded over her victory. They were embarrassed about their behaviour. And a few of them started apologizing to her. Carmen told them that physical strength is not the sole determinant of power. The real power comes from knowledge which only makes us better with time. Carmen had the biggest smile ever while leaving for her home!
Knowledge is like a mirror. It brings us closer to ourselves. It creates our opinions and views which make us intellectual beings. It is the patroness of all explorations, discoveries, and inventions. Knowledge propels us towards power.
Without it, our life is stagnant. We are stuck in one place with no signs of progress. Having sufficient knowledge and not being able to act will not make us powerful. Hence, knowledge, along with adequate action drives us towards a powerful future.
