“A day without laughter is a day wasted.” – Charlie Chaplin

Laughter is undoubtedly the most inexpensive medicine. Laughter never fails to fill a person with happiness and joy. It can arise from tickling, humorous stories, jokes, etc. It is like an audible experience of what a person is feeling from the inside. There are thousands of languages in the world that people speak differently, but the language of laughter is common to all. It makes you feel elated and pleased. Laughter is innate to us and is our birthright. Before even learning how to speak, babies learn to laugh and smile. Laughter is necessary for a person’s survival. No human being can live his or her life in utter sadness and gloom.

Types of Laughter

There are various types of laughter depending upon their intensity, emotion and pitch. Etiquette laughter is the laughter that you display as a courtesy and to get along well with others. It is mostly done in formal settings and with people whom we share professional relations with. Contagious laughter takes place when a series of people start laughing just after sharing a glance. It happens in an informal setting and among our families and friends. Nervous laughter is evoked when a person is in a state of confusion or is embarrassed. It many times happens without the person, even knowing himself or herself.

Benefits of Laughter

Laughter has physical, mental and social benefits. A whole-hearted laugh relieves our body from stress, tensions and anxieties and leaves it feeling relaxed and free. It even relaxes our muscles and lightens our mood. It also helps in the formation of disease and infection-fighting antibodies and helps better our immunity system. Laughter aids in the release of endorphins which are the feel-good chemicals of our body. Their release promotes an overall well being and is even able to relieve the person of pain temporarily. Our blood flow can be increased by laughter.

It also aids in the proper and better functioning of the blood vessels. Thus, laughter can help a person protect himself or herself from heart attacks and other such cardiovascular complications. Laughter has also been scientifically proven to burn calories. A good laughter session of 10 to 15 minutes can quickly burn around 40 calories. Agreed that it is no substitution for a gym, but by laughing regularly, a person can lose up to 4 pounds in a year.

It can also lighten an angry head. Instead of lashing out at people and confronting them with bitterness, laughter helps us to face the situation with a clear and unoccupied head. A study in Norway found that those people who have a sense of humour in them and enjoy laughing, outlive those who do not. Laughter has also been found to be helpful to those battling cancer. Laughter helps us to combat with distressing emotions like anxiety, sadness or anxiousness.

It also helps one to forget about focusing the energy on negative things and instead direct them towards productive outcomes. It helps relax the mind and focus in a way that holds no distractions. When a mind is clear with laughter, it helps us to look at a particular situation with more than a single perspective. We are also able to see the bigger picture in realistic terms.  Laughter binds us with people and strengthens our relations with them, thus bringing them closer to us.

This can have a positive effect on our mental as well as emotional health. Laughter helps you to form, maintain and strengthen your relationships with others. It helps to push back the fear of holding back and helps one express his or her true feelings and intentions. The power of laughter makes one more spontaneous and lets one let go of his or her defensiveness. It clears our head of all troubles, criticisms and disappointments.

Smiling is a way of starting laughter. Smile more oftenly. Lift your heads consumed in your smartphones and smile at people around you. Smile at the waiter who serves you food, at the people whom you pass in your street and at your friends and family. If you consider yourself as a person who is low on humour, then mingle with people who spread laughter and try to stay connected with them. They will help you find fun and happiness.
