International Lefthanders Day – 13 August 2020

The International Lefthanders Day is celebrated on the 13th of August every year around the world. Being left handed is a big challenge in itself. A normal human being tends to use his right hand for all functionalities in his day to day tasks.

It’s very difficult to use the left hand for any activity that the right hand is designed to do. But there is a section of a world population that uses the left hand with the same ease as any right handed person would use his right hand to do work.

The international lefthanders day is more of an awareness creation day about the various challenges faced by the left handed community. It is also a day to voice the thoughts and expressions of left handers of how they feel in a world that is majored by the right handed population at large.

In this article, we shall discuss various aspects of International lefthanders day with respect to the history of the event, importance and different themes for celebration plus explain how the day is celebrated.

International Lefthanders Day 2020 – History

Dean R Campbell formed the Lefthanders International Inc in the year 1976 and also celebrated the first international lefthanders day. He formed the organization with a goal to bring in awareness amongst the right handed community regarding the advantages and disadvantages of being left handed.

People who are left handed are viewed from different perspectives by right handed populations. It may generally be due to ignorance or not gaining enough knowledge about what it takes to be a left-handed person.

Campbell explained what it is being a left-handed person and declared it not to be a disability of sorts. They are not people with disabled needs either. They are normally functioning humans carrying out all tasks with their left hand instead of their right hand.

Significance of International Lefthanders Day

Around 10% of the world belongs to the left-handed community. There may be chances of children who are lefthanders to have developed a sense of special needs.

This comes with the fact that normal children develop the use of their right hand that’s quite normal. When it comes to the left handed group, children may need special focus right from their childhood as they are designed to function in a manner quite different from the right handed community.

To understand that their needs are different and that they require special focus in itself is a big task. Parents need to treat children with the left had functioning in a different way.

It’s more important to create awareness among parents and educate them about left handed minds and then tell them how to raise children with left hand usage.

To bring all these needs and requirements of left handed communities to the fore, events, talks and seminars are organized around the world by concerned groups.

It is not a celebration to be precise; it’s more of an awareness day that helps parents understand the underlying needs of their left handed children.

Through special campaigns the unique features and special differences of these communities are explained to people with an aim to educate them.

International Lefthanders Day 2020 Themes

It’s funny at the same time educative to celebrate a day for all the lefties of the world. Friends and families can wish their left handed family members by posting pictures with them on social media handles. They can encourage their left handed family members to share their experiences through messages.

International Lefthanders Day Celebration

It’s a day for celebration and partying hard for all the left-handed folks! Left hand themed parties could bring out a change in place of the same old boring tea parties.

There could be more variety in terms of celebrating the 10% of the population that is left- handed, like cricket matches for lefties versus right handed groups, activities exclusively using the left hand alone.

Games and activities could be organized for both right handed and left handed groups wherein only the left hand is allowed to be used by both the groups to complete the tasks set up in front of them.

Tea parties could be held with a difference! All members attending the parties should be told only to use their left hands to carry out all tasks of eating, drinking, lifting items and reaching out to things.

A handshake theme party could be organized wherein greeting each other happens only using the left hand and comedy shows organized to explain to guests about the various inconveniences lefties face in a right dominated world.

The Left Hander’s Club

We need to be sensitive and caring towards people around us who have inherited a world of difference in them. Not all of us are born to be replicas or identical clones of the same breed! Each of us is unique and different in our own ways!

In 1990, our nation identified the need to pool in talents and personalities who are left handed and provide them with support and recognition. Also, it provides a common platform for lefties to share their struggles, everyday lives, inconveniences, health issues, happy moments of rarity and uniqueness and much more.

Through this club, members are allowed to interact with other lefties members within and outside the club, help more members join the club and spread awareness.

Periodical activities and group interactions are held regularly to encourage them to feel normal and get along as one with the rest of the world.

For members in need, advice and suggestions are provided and concerns addressed about various day-to-day struggles. Public awareness campaigns are also another developmental activity carried out by the club and also encourages an opening of more such clubs in the near future.

The world around us is dominated by famous personalities and icons that are left handers yet have made it big in their career paths or the dreams they chased. The world is hopeful for a brighter tomorrow, a living ambience where differences amongst people are understood and accepted.

We don’t wish to provide a world that lets our children suffer because of their inherent differences. We must encourage a healthy atmosphere for the growth and prosperity of all humans at all levels of society.
