Music has been part of human history since time immemorial. Our ancestors have always relied on music to find peace and comfort. Music is a vital source of happiness in our lives. Victor Hugo rightly said, “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” It is a form of art that connects us to our inner selves.

You can find music in nature too. There is a rhythm to the beautiful waterfalls or the swirling wind. Plants and animals are quite fond of music as well. Life becomes boring if music is missing. Let us get to know more about it.

What is Music?

Music can be defined as a collection of pleasant sounds and melodies. However, this does not completely describe what it means to us. It is much more than a harmonious combination of sounds and melodies. The art of composing tunes with the help of various musical instruments can also be referred to as music.

This art form expresses ideas and emotions through the basic elements of rhythm, pitch, pulse, beat, timbre, etc. You can perform music using different kinds of instruments and vocal techniques.

Music is diversified and different countries have different styles. It is a major marker of identity. For example, when you think of Scotland, you can instantly connect with the back pipes. Similarly, Germany is popular for its trumpets. There are so many different genres (styles) of music.

New ones keep coming up every other day. Genre refers to the numerous aspects of music like the rhythm, art of performance, and instruments used for performing the music. Some of the most popular genres include pop, rock, electronic music, jazz, classical, and blues. People also like listening to folk and country music.

History of Music

The origin of music is a bit unclear and much debated on. However, music has been marked in certain phases of history. These periods have introduced unique music which is still relevant today. One such period ranged from the 6th to 16th centuries (medieval era).

This era witnessed monophonic and polyphonic sounds. Then the renaissance brought us rhythms and distinct sounds. The romantic and classic periods also contributed largely to the music by bringing a lot of innovations.

The 20th century marked a revolutionary transition in music. With the onset of technology, we started using electronic components for creating and performing music. This century also accounted for the introduction of jazz and electronic music. It has also made us realize how influential world-famous musicians can be. Today we look up to our favourite artists and groups. They have become a source of inspiration for us.

Power of Music

Music can be compared to a mother’s affection. It relaxes our mind and body after a stressful day at work. Music benefits the students. It helps them improve their concentration and makes learning super easy. We can still remember all the nursery rhymes we learned when we were kids.

Music has boundless powers. It does not discriminate language, religion, caste, creed, etc. It crosses borders and unites people of all ethnicities. The legends testify the power of music. Tansen would bring the rains by singing Raag Megh Malhar. The music that originated from Lord Krishna’s flute would mesmerize the Gopis and made them surrender themselves to Him.

Importance of Music

Our interaction with sound happens so frequently. It cannot be avoided because music exists everywhere. Music affects us at an individual level for our varied interests. Some people like to hear music solely for entertainment purposes. And others consider it as a medium to express their feelings.

So many artists use music as a source of income. There are also aspiring musicians who like to study the tones and techniques of music. Music is known to have the qualities of healing. It triggers an emotional response whenever we listen to it. This is one of the reasons why psychiatrists have started using music as a form of therapy.

It can be used to treat mental disorders like depression, anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, etc. It is known to reduce the high levels of blood pressure in patients. Music therapy benefits children who have been diagnosed to have autism. It helps them with their communication.

Moreover, studies have shown that babies start hearing outside noises by the fifth month of pregnancy. Music can be used for prenatal simulation. This helps the baby relax when they are born.

Music can control our mood. When we are already sad and hear a sad song, it makes us feel even gloomier. On the contrary, our mood brightens up when we hear a happy melody. Our brain has neural-transmitters like dopamine which get activated when we hear joyful music.

These give us a feeling of satisfaction and comfort. Music is also great for meditation. It plays an important role in the spiritual world, as well. While worshipping God, devotees use music as a mode of prayer. This helps in bringing out their humbling emotions.

Solo artists and bands perform their masterpieces in front of large crowds. Music is an essential part of movies. Imagine watching your favourite movie without any music. Even the thought of it seems weird. It makes us appreciate music all the more. The entertainment sector is hugely inclined towards music.

The advertising industry largely benefits from music. Companies use music to grab the attention of their customers. They feature popular songs which go well with their product. This way, people get attracted and buy their products whenever they listen to that song. It is a great marketing strategy.

Conclusion

Music is magical. It is like the elixir of life, which makes us feel alive. It dictates our thoughts and affects our behaviour around other people. It is a great tool that promotes culture. It has majorly contributed to the society we live in.

The music industry has gifted us with talented composers, artists, lyricists, and not to mention sensational songs. Music has always been and will always be a fundamental piece of our lives. We must respect it and preserve it at all costs.
