The bond shared between humans and animals is a profound one. Their interaction influences their behaviour. To some extent, they are mutually dependent on each other. There are numerous species of animals. All of these have unique abilities and roles on this planet.
Some people are fond of wild animals, whereas some love to have pets of their own. I find animals to be very interesting and friendly. Out of all of them, my favourite animal is a dog.
Dogs are often taken as a pet because of their domestic nature. They are four-footed animals with bright shiny eyes. They have sharp noses which enables them to have a strong sense of smell.
They have two ears, sharp teeth, and a short tail. Dogs can be of different kinds. Some are small, whereas some are giants. Some are sleek, and some are furry.
Their skin tones and shades vary. We can find them in different colours like white, black, brown, red, and grey. They are present all across the globe.
They can be your best friend in a matter of minutes. They are just adorable. Sometimes they can act a bit goofy and playful. However, they form an integral part of our lives once we get to know them.
Characteristics of a Dog
Dogs are direct descendants of wolves. They belong to the same Canine family as that of the wolves. A dog is probably the first species of animals to be domesticated by humans.
It is a terrestrial carnivore with an extraordinary sense of smell. An adult dog has almost 42 teeth capable of tearing through the flesh.
They can swim in the water. Their wet nose helps them absorb scent and chemicals. This explains why they love to eat food which smells great.
They sweat through their paws. Sometimes they can be a little mischievous, but they can be trained quite easily. While domestic dogs are considered to be carnivorous, they can also be fed plant-based diets. Usually, they eat raw meat, bones, fish, rice, etc.
They enjoy eating bones. They also look forward to getting rewarded with treats when they are being trained. They get really happy when they are acknowledged. Dogs are great partners to have, and the association between humans and dogs has been going on for generations now.
Dogs can live up to 12-15 years depending on their species and overall health. Smaller dogs tend to live longer. Dogs are considered to be mammals because female dogs can reproduce and feed their offspring. The litters are called puppies, and they are simply lovable. Dogs love to be cuddled.
They appreciate physical affections like pets, snuggle, and gentle hugs. Sharing these makes you feel more deeply connected to them. When they are happy or eager, they wag their tails.
They are social beings and like to stay in a protective and clean environment. Dogs can be temperamental. They enjoy occasional sight-seeing and picnics. Some of them love to swim and play with toys. They are swift and alert all the time. Dogs can help us in various purposes like hunting, tracking, sniffing and guarding.
A study shows that there are more than 150 breeds of dogs in this world. Some of the most sought after breeds include Labrador retriever, Golden Retriever, German shepherd, Bulldog, Shiba Inu, Beagle, Siberian husky, Malamute, Poodle, Dachshund, and Pug, etc.
They can be as huge as a Great Dane or a Giant Mastiff and as small as a Chihuahua or a Poodle. They love their humans and are extremely loyal. Dogs are best known for being good therapists.
They can be good indicators of your social and emotional well-being. People with blood pressure and anxiety get benefited from their presence. They are a huge assistance to blind people.
These amazing creatures can also be trained to work on military grounds to track and detect bombs. They often accompany the policemen during their investigation in the crime scenes to trace out the criminals. They are also found in airports and borders for security purposes.
Benefits of having a dog in the family
Dogs are very protective and faithful to us humans. They are extremely intelligent and can guard our homes from strangers. In case of theft or any other suspicious activity, their loud barks can wake up an entire neighbourhood. Children love to spend time with dogs.
They can be your true companion. These beautiful creatures are full of energy and are bound to lighten up your mood. Coming home to them after a stressful day of work will surely make you feel the happiest.
Dogs are not only quick-witted but also easily adapt to varying situations. Some of them can even be trained to fetch fish from the lake.
They love to be surrounded by their favourite humans. They can sense it if you are depressed or anxious. They try their best to get you out of that state of mind. Having a dog means a positive effect on your fitness and well-being.
They are robust creatures who love to run around. Exercise becomes a part of your life around them. Whenever you are around them, you find yourself smiling and laughing. These are affectionate animals that respect their humans and must be treated well.
It is our responsibility to look after these kind and hearty companions. It is a lifetime of commitment, and we should treat them as our own. Paying visits to veterinary hospitals for a routine check-up is a good practice. Dogs are indeed our true friends.
However, there are millions of dogs that are abandoned on the streets. This can take a toll on their mental and physical health. Though there are animal shelters all across the world, a dog always needs a family. Under no circumstances must we abandon them and leave them to their state of misery.
They never leave us in our times of despair. We must try to reciprocate the same amount of love and affection towards them. These beautiful creatures deserve to be loved and must be cherished till the end. It is rightly said- Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
