If there is one part of my life I’ll never be able to forget, it would be my days in school. While I do believe we learn a lot in life from hands-on experience, I definitely think that we learn the most in school.
This isn’t just because of our teachers or the syllabus, but rather because of the environment, a school provides where you interact with other people, hear their stories and learn from them too.
School is a shared learning experience that is a luxury for many even today, and those of us who have that must always cherish it.
Why I Loved My School
In a lot of senses, my school was like my second home, and this holds true for most people with experience as school children. It was important to me that I went to a school where I felt safe, loved and had friends I could enjoy learning with.
I’ve been to many schools, so I think that people like me develop an even better understanding of exactly what they look for in a school.
While parents seek to enrol their child in top schools, it is just as important that the child’s needs are fulfilled. For me, those needs involved having the freedom to express myself creatively and think critically.
After going to several schools, all with their own advantages and disadvantages, I finally ended up spending my senior years at a place that seemed to fulfil all my needs. The school consisted of several buildings that served as blocks for different disciplines, surrounded by fresh greenery that allowed me to stay calm.
This prevented me from being confined to a single classroom for the entire day, which I appreciated a lot. This is because I had to stay in the same class all day in my previous school and I found that it impacted my productivity.
My high school was a massive change from my previous school in a lot of aspects. In my old school, I didn’t have many opportunities to showcase my creativity, and the monotony of rote learning greatly affected my mental health.
Rote learning definitely works wonders for some people, but unfortunately, I wasn’t one of them. I needed more than that, and I felt like the environment at my old school was trapping me inside a box.
Moving schools helped me enter a place where I felt accepted for aspects of myself that I was mocked for before. My high school allowed me to unleash my creative spirit and participate in many activities, ranging from stage performances to writing more stories and poetry.
My assignments involved more research and critical thinking, which made learning much more fun. More than that, I found friends and made memories that are impossible to forget.
What has My School Taught Me?
The time I spent in school has definitely been the biggest factor in shaping me as a person and helping me develop goals and aspirations.
School plays a crucial role in character building, because it puts children in a setting where they are meant to learn and develop social skills at the same time, while also maintaining individuality in an environment that can seem dangerously machine-like.
School can also play an important part in people’s lives but in a negative manner. A lot of people can’t handle school because several of their struggles find a home where they might be bullied, might not be able to keep up with academics, might not be able to express their individuality or just might not have friends at all.
This is not what school is meant to be- one should feel like their school is a safe place where they can truly explore the world and themselves.
Therefore schools must try to foster an environment where children are happy and where they learn with joy and passion. School is an excellent place to enhance skills, and therefore schools must cater to all sorts of skills and abilities, rather than staying limited to a select few as Indian society has a tendency to do.
Moreover, the main thing a school does is provide education and free children from being brought up with misconceptions and stereotypes that could affect their worldview.
People with an education open themselves up to several more options and help with decision making in the future. It is always important to be educated about the world around you and how it functions because knowledge is key to survival.
I do miss my school days quite a bit because they were such a major part of my life. It is quite hard to imagine not going to an educational institution every day because it sets into your routine.
I believe that although education is a right, I had it as a privilege, considering that there are so many people who can’t afford school. Schools can change people’s lives, and therefore everyone must have the chance.
