Benefits of NCERT Hindi books for UPSC IAS Exam

NCERT books are very extensive and have in detail explanation to every concept. For example, if you take up a particular topic in any subject, you don’t get just a surface view of the concept. An end to end description carrying details about suggestive introduction, concise explanation and in-depth facts and figures supported by images is provided.

This wholesome and qualitative product is the result of extensive research carried out by expert panels and committee members of the NCERT fraternity, thoroughly supported by government faculties.

If we were to focus on the dual language availability of these contents, it is all thanks to the committee that has worked extensively for it. Experts in text book formation and content creation have made sure that no content slips out of context while translating it from one language to another. For example, translating concepts in mathematics is not a very easy task.

The wordings and specific formats/symbols are especially difficult to be carried on to another language while maintaining the decorum of the source language. But the NCERT committee has taken every bit of care to deliver the same content in the same breadth across both English and Hindi.

How UPSC Aspirants can be benefited from NCERT Hindi medium books

All said and done about NCERT books, let us now try to know the specific advantages that these books have and the edge they carry that other books don’t offer:

Stick to the basics

Every concept has to be approached with an introduction, a brief explanation followed by a detailed explanation and then its applications if any. Supportive content in the form of diagrams and pictures can be added for easy visual grasping and interpretation.

Imagine being asked an over the counter question in the UPSC examination. The first thing to do is to refer to NCERT books. They give you information right from the basics and UPSC students not just benefit from these explanations, they also help you crack similar questions.

Easy to understand language

It’s not enough if text books contain high usage of jargons and complex technical words that not just make the content difficult to follow, but make it an unreachable document to the end user. Such books may depict high standards and flow of stipulated logic in the sense of the presenter, but may fail at the hands of the reader who is relying on it.

Students are given text books so that they get a better understanding of the subject they are reading, so all concepts must be relatable. For example, if you ask a student to carry out a simple potato experiment to explain osmosis, it is the right approach in the right sense.

Be it in Hindi or English, these kinds of examples can be suggested in an easy to understand language. It makes learning simple and does not bring in any complexity to what is taught.

Exemplar problems and unique solutions

There are two ways of approaching a particular topic – one method is to teach by quoting examples associated with the topic. It could be a simple example that students may want to try themselves. In this case, language does not act as a barrier as the method may seem easy either in English or Hindi presentation.

Now the other way it to explain a concept through its applications. Every concept may not have real time applications and may just be a concept to be applied in one of the problems in core sciences. This may need the usage of application via exemplar problems.

The main idea behind teaching concepts through problems is showing step by step methodology of the application of the concept in order to find a solution to the problem presented. How a theoretical concept can be made use of practically in order to arrive at a particular solution is understood right by the use of exemplar problems.

Coverage rate of topics is extensive

The reason why students prefer NCERT books for UPSC exams is the coverage rate of these text books. Care is taken by text book preparation committees to cover almost every important concept that a student of a particular age and standard should be familiarised with.

Also, the entire country is taken into picture and the cultural and geographical differences of various regions are kept in mind while preparing text books. CBSE schools are present in the north, south, eastern and western parts of the country too. So, be it the specific usage of terms in Hindi language or its relevance across different regions of the country, students should be able to relate accordingly. This criterion with related regional sensitivity is taken into account while setting up text book formats.

Useful beyond school curriculum

The best use of NCERT text books is their value even after a student has completed his school/college education. One of the toughest exams like UPSC considers it a resource and prescribes them for study. Many successful candidates have explained their usage in the exams since these books carry every concept in great detail and provide an explanation right from the basic level of understanding.

There is not much of difference in the presentation between Hindi and English text books. The medium or the language of instruction in these text books is the only major difference. Flexibility and adaptability to the format and the schema of the language gives the user a free flow of reading in any language, thus not settling for any discrepancies in this regard.

Hindi books cater well to Hindi medium schools. It is the best way to settle and curb any disparities between the rural and the urban student population. IT stresses on the fact that education in itself shouldn’t become a barrier due to language imposed restrictions.

Role of NCERT Hindi books in CBSE curriculum

The prescribed syllabus for the CBSE board lies entirely in the NCERT books. Ask any CBSE student and you would find him sticking to the NCERT book in hand. Every state has its own board and there are students who find the state syllabus more interesting.

Likewise, at the centre, we have the NCERT books that are the prescribed norm for setting the standard in education. In other words, the CBSE board prescribes the NCERT books for the CBSE syllabus.

A vast majority of the country’s population is Hindi speaking and many are not fluent and known to the English language. It is also a known matter that a majority of the population in India still lives in villages and people there find Hindi reading more comfortable than unknown grasping in English. Hindi is the language of the vast majority and that simply makes the popularity of Hindi books more in our country.

So if the government has initiatives to teach people in the language that they are comfortable with, we must applaud them for their efforts. After all, education is more important irrespective of the language that it is taught in. In fact, English as a language is in itself taught through the Hindi medium.

A large number of Hindi medium CBSE schools also attribute to the fact that NCERT Hindi books are as popular as their English counterparts. Language seriously shouldn’t be a barrier in this case as the motto and the values envisaged underlie in spreading education and not making an issue out of languages.

Conclusion

NCERT panels and committees comprising of experts who are well bred in both Hindi and English are facilitated to provide high quality and top notch, essential information to students to help them at various levels of their education.

The difficulty level and understanding of the students are kept in mind while training young students and taking them across various concepts. Concepts are presented in such a way that they make learning fun through text books.

Hence, NCERT text books are considered the go-to materials and are highly popular and recommended for all types of examinations.
