According to the World Health Organization (WHO), any sound higher than 70 decibels is considered to be hazardous and can cause ill effects to living organisms.

It is a physical form of pollution that does not directly affect the land, air, or any other elements of the environment. However, it takes a huge toll on our livelihood. • Transportation –  Some of the major sources of Noise/Sound Pollution involve man-made entities. The noise produced by motor vehicles and various other modes of transportation forms a huge part of it. With the growing population, there is a huge increase in the number of vehicles, and unnecessary honking has contributed heavily to the increase in the levels of noise.
  • Industrialization – Another outcome of urbanization is the growing industrial sector, which is the second major cause of Noise pollution. With the industrial revolution, the manufacturing sector keeps on expanding, and with it grows the loudness. Heavy machines, Printing presses, factory inventories, grinding mills, exhaust fans are all largely involved in this.
  • Poor Planning – Mostly in all developing nations, people move towards urban areas to make a livelihood. But poor urban planning can lead to a lot of issues. Large families living in congested households are subjected to a lot of fights which itself is very disturbing for the society.
  • Construction Sector – In every part of the world, construction activities play a vital role. Mining activities and construction of bridges, dams, flyovers, roads, stations, etc. are necessary in order to lessen traffic congestion and will keep on happening because of it the need of the hour. The equipment which is used in these activities causes too much noise.
  • Household Activities – We are surrounded by gadgets, and we use them every day. TV, Vacuum cleaners, washing machines, mixer grinders, air conditioners, dryers are some of the things which contribute to this noise pollution.

Effects of Noise Pollution

  • Our hearing ability gets affected by noise pollution. Constant exposure to loud noises can be disastrous to our eardrums and can lead to loss of hearing.
  • Workers of industrial sectors often are subjected to health issues like extreme stress, hypertension, fatigue, sleeplessness, and various other psychological diseases.
  • Loud noises can increase blood pressure, which can lead to several heart-related diseases.
  • Sleeping disorders like insomnia hamper our well being and performance in the professional sectors of life.
  • Frequent communication barriers occur due to loud noises, which create a lot of misunderstandings between people.
  • Noise pollution also affects wildlife. Animals behave differently when they are subjected to loud noises. Some suffer hearing losses, which makes them vulnerable as prey and leads to their diminishing population. Pets are seen to act aggressively or get anxious and fear loud noise, and this is why we should avoid using crackers when they are around.
  • Plants and old buildings are also affected by noise pollution.

The health hazards of noise pollution are many, and it should be our responsibility to prevent any further degradation of our environment due to it.
