Pondicherry Police Service | Pondicherry Civil Service

Pondicherry Civil Service and Pondicherry Police Service are administered by the central government as a central service. It comes under the Group ‘B’ civil services. Aspirants can successfully attempt the Civil Services Exam following which, on successful selection, they will be shortlisted for these services. Selection depends on the number of vacancies available, number of aspirants who have applied for the post, order of merit, higher ranking scales, and other criteria.

Training Offered to Probationary Officers

The Pondicherry Civil Service officers get initial probation training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy for administration. Following this, they get specialised training. Pondicherry Police Service officers get training at Police Academy, Pondicherry.

Postings after Training 

  • The initial posting for Pondicherry Civil Service officers shall be made in the Junior Administrative Grade, which could be either grade 1 or 2 depending on the higher decision and they will not be attached to any particular position till senior promotions. The probationary period stretches for the tenure of 2 years. Based on senior vigilance and letter of appraisal, the probationary period may or may not be further extended.
  • IF a person wishes to return to his parent government organization during the period of probation, he has special powers attached to his position to do so, under the specific guidance of his senior authorities. He could be posted as the chairman or a member of the commission. He could also be posted as the officer in the ministry of home affairs. In this particular cadre, he will serve as the joint secretary to the government. In other roles, he will serve as the joint secretary of Pondicherry administration.
  • For Pondicherry Police Service officers, the criterion is quite different. They could be posted in various roles, such as the chairman of the UPSC. They could serve as the joint secretary for the responsibility of the union territories division of the government of India. They could be a member appointed as inspector general of the Pondicherry police department. Probationers could further serve as chief secretaries of the Government of Pondicherry. The finance secretary is another lucrative position enjoyed under this cadre.
