Good morning to everyone present here. Today I am going to brief you all about the Tryst of destiny. Tryst of destiny is a speech delivered by our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to the Indian constituent assembly on the eve of independence around midnight of 14th of August 1947. The struggle of Indians against the colonial rule was going for more than a decade. Indians were struggling & was trying very hard to free themselves from the Britishers.
The tremendous momentum in the freedom fight was brought by Mahatma Gandhi, who gave a new direction to the freedom fight. The Britishers kept trying to fail every step of Indians, that they will not leave India ever. However, things changed after the Second World War. The Indians got the belief that they are going to get freedom from the two hundred years long colonial rule. There were new problems for India knocking at the door. There was disagreement between Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru & Jinnah regarding what will happen to India after independence.
After in-depth discussion & negotiation between parties, it was decided that India will be divided into India & Pakistan. On the eve of independence, Jawaharlal Nehru gave the speech addressing the nation, highlighting all the struggles & efforts people have made to get freedom from this two hundred years old colonial rule. In his memorable speech, the only political element was “Tryst with Destiny”.
In his speech, he tried to summarize every aspect of India. He indicated that it is the dawn for new modern India, a fresh start from the beginning. He compared the independence with new hopes & lights. He also mentioned India as “she” which is a poetic metaphor. He highlighted all the pains & struggles all Indians did to get rid of the Britishers. He also mentioned that “India will rise” with the new energy fighting every odd in its way.
The speech makes an appeal to every Indian about the challenges ahead of them. In his speech, he also mentioned a few of the preeminent challenges like poverty, inequality, opportunity & disease. Nehru always dreamt for a peaceful India with prosperity, unity & strength to help the nation. There was mention of Mahatma Gandhi & his principles which will take India to great heights. He stressed on continue to believe in his principles & keep following him for a better India in future.
He kept a clear image of India in front of the people so that everyone will continue the unity for the development of the country. This speech was key to the beginning of new chapters for India. He also referred to the era as full of opportunities & responsibilities with new adventures. The focus of the speech was the peaceful India which is envisioned by the father of the nation. After the liberation of India, there was a lot of uncertainty & confusion, which was addressed by Nehru in his speech with clarity.
Being the first Prime Minister of free India, he tried to motivate & inspire people through his words. India had already made many sacrifices in the struggle for freedom, so Nehru wanted to make people realize that now there is no looking back, we all need to move ahead with confidence & unity. He also expressed his pain for the division of India into two different countries. There was happiness, anxiety, excitement, pain & euphoria in his speech.
He also used the opportunity to connect with global people & send them best wishes. He made it clear that India is now an important player in East & willing to cooperate with the world in every possible way. Free India will be a nation who is always ready to contribute to humanity. It was a great speech which is difficult to be explained in every aspect & emotion which Nehru Ji carried. I tried my best to explain it in the time allotted to me, but there is much more in the speech which cannot be overlooked. Thank You for giving me this opportunity to speak.
