Of all the seasons in India, winter is probably the best. It is the coldest season of the year and is from late October until March. The peak time when the winter is experienced the most is in December and January. I love winter for many reasons. First of all, the winter season comes after the rainy season. Rain washes all the dirt and sadness of the town. Then, the pleasant winter arrives, bringing big festivals like Diwali and Christmas along.
So for me, it’s also a season of celebrations. Diwali is a festival of light and is celebrated all over India with great joy. It lasts for five days. I enjoy the sweets and snacks prepared for Diwali. My mother says Diwali sweets like ‘laddus’, ‘barfi’ and ‘shankarpali’ are not only delicious but healthy as well. This is because they provide enough calories to sustain the cold of the season.
During Christmas, we wait excitedly for Santa Claus as he brings gifts for all the children. The days are shorter and the nights get longer in the winter season. The sun rises quite late. The mornings are frigid and foggy, but my mother always gives my brothers and me some hot drinks like coffee, tea or hot chocolate. After that, we put on warm clothes on our uniform to protect ourselves from cold and go to school. Every Sunday, she applies oil on our body and makes us sit in the warm sunshine.
We sit in the sun for hours. At night, people in our area make a bonfire out of wooden sticks, and we like to sit around, chat and sing songs. It’s so cold in my town that one can not sleep without a blanket. It’s challenging to go out at night as we often catch a cold during winter. Winter temperatures vary in different parts of India.
Due to the low temperatures, people wear warm, woollen clothes in northern states of India. Whereas in southern India, the weather is moderate all year round. Sometimes, it gets a little cold during the night and in the early morning.
In places like Mumbai, warm clothes are mostly not needed. However, in the uppermost northern part of India like Kashmir or Shimla, it snows a lot in winter. The winter season is quite painful in such places, especially for poor people, who do not have warm clothes and a proper place to live. It is difficult for them to sleep at night. Sometimes people die from cold in such areas where the cold is extreme.
In December, we get two weeks of winter vacation. Since the last two winters, we visit other places in India during the holiday. Last winter, we went to Goa. It was the most memorable trip to date. It has gorgeous beaches, and the climate is perfect and not as chilly as North India.
Especially during the time of New Year and Christmas, the place is buzzing. A year before that, we spent our winter holidays in Kerala. It’s a beautiful state, and they call it God’s own country. The southern states have a tropical climate. So winters there, are not as cold as Northern India. During a Kerala trip, I enjoyed the backwater tour. This winter, we are planning to go on a trip to Rajasthan.
We get lots of healthy fruits, vegetables and dry fruits in the winter. They are suitable for health. It keeps our immunity level high, and we do not get tired soon. They help deal with winter-related problems such as cold and flu. ‘Sarso ka saag’ with ‘Roti’ along with ‘Gajar ka halwa’ is my most favourite winter meal.
My relative lives in Canada, and he says that the winter there is the season of snow, frost, biting winds and extreme cold. During the winter, people prefer to stay at home. They mostly eat fatty food, which takes longer to digest so that it helps to keep their body warm. Most of the people there wait for winter mainly because of Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Where I live, winter is beautiful and charming. I love the laziness of snuggling in the blanket all day long. I love taking a walk in the garden during winter mornings. Some people find the winter sky gloomy, but I think it makes me more thoughtful. My town feels very fresh in winter. From mid-February, the flowering season starts.
Winter flowers like marigold, petunia, pansy and zinnia are usually very bright, colourful and look gorgeous. It beautifies everything around the place and makes it look like a celebration. It fills my heart with joy.
