The environment is surrounding or a condition in which all life forms exists. It is not just green that we see around us but a life-giving source to all the species on earth. An entire ecosystem exists in the environment which supplements a structured pattern for living. We celebrate World Environment Day every year on 5th June to value and cherish the elements provided to us by mother nature and to promote awareness about among the masses.

Pollution is the root cause of the disintegration of the environment. The human being is the chief agent in sabotaging the whole ecosystem. It occurs when the natural elements are destroyed. Certain aspects which nature could not break down lingers on the surface and pollutes the surrounding—several types of pollution on Earth: air, water, soil and noise.

Need for World Environment Day

In the words of Margaret Thatcher, “There is no monopoly on this earth for any generation; we all are for the survival of life –the cost of which we have to pay. Nobody owes the world; everyone living on this planet is temporary. It is humans who depend upon Mother Nature for its existence. It is essential and crucial to save our world from misuse and deleterious effects. Also, the resources gifted to us should be adequately mechanised, respected and used judiciously. Prevention is only possible through consistent efforts and awareness.

The government should not be the only force to curb pollution, but it is mandatory for the people to act responsibly and collectively to take measures against pollution. On World Environment Day, we should reduce plastic consumption and adopt eco-friendly products in our day to day life. An oath should be taken to plant more trees and plants to increase the percentage of oxygen. By joining campaigns, awareness programs, we can implement carpooling and using public transport the most.

The three R’s- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle should be followed to avert pollution. The leaders who propagate saving environment should receive maximum support as it will help to reduce climate change. It is necessary to stop using CFC and burning of fossil fuels to improve air quality. Biogas preparation is an excellent method for dumped garbage. The use of pesticides and harmful fertilizers in agricultural activities should be discouraged. Organic farming is an alternative to minimalize pollution. Floods cause fertile soil to get washed away; therefore, mangroves should not be destroyed as they prevent floods and Tsunamis, thus saving soil for agriculture.
