Essay on World Health Day: 7th April is globally celebrated as World Health Day by the World Health Organization. Various programs are globally arranged across different countries to spread awareness about the importance of good health. The day was celebrated for the first time in the year 1950. The day is dedicated to spread awareness about various diseases, cure, preventive measures, sound health, fitness and other health related parameters.

World Health Day is celebrated globally on the 7th of April each year to emphasize the need of leading a healthy and stable life. It marks the anniversary of the founding of WHO in 1948. It was when WHO felt the need to bring out issues concerned with health and well being. The world health assembly decided to dedicate a day to global health and started an initiative called World Health Day. It is celebrated each year since 1950. This day has especially been dedicated to spread awareness about the importance of good health in our life.

World Health Day Activities

On this day, many activities related to health are organised in schools, colleges, hospitals, NGOs, etc. People are made aware of the importance of their health and how to have a healthy lifestyle. Students are made aware of the importance of playing more outdoor games and be as much active as they can. Due to such an early age, kids can be drawn towards a healthy lifestyle. Many health care campaigns are organised in hospitals on this day. Many health check-ups and facilities are made free to make people more caring for their health, and explaining them the importance of regular health check-ups. NGOs contribute by organizing several workshops and activities related to health and make people aware of a good health care regime.

Themes of World Health Day

The themes of World Health Day on each year reflects upon the health hazard/s that the world faced in that following year, like in the year 1953, the theme was “Health is Wealth”, or in the year 1957, all the people were not getting food properly, hence the theme that was decided on the World Health Day was “Food for All”.  Also, Malaria became a major problem in the year 1960, to fight it, it was included in the theme on the occasion of World Health Day, at that time the theme was “Malaria Eradication – Challenge for the World”. Even today, many malaria patients appear but are becoming less than before.  The themes of the last decade are as follows:

  • 2010 – Urbanization and Health: Make Cities Healthier
  • 2011 – Antimicrobial Resistance: No Action Today, No Cure Tomorrow
  • 2012 – Good Health Adds Life to Years
  • 2013 – Hypertension: Silent Killer, Global Public Health Crisis

  • 2015 – Food safety
  • 2016 – Diabetes: Scale up prevention, strengthen care, and enhance surveillance
  • 2017 – Depression: Let’s talk
  • 2018 – Universal Health Coverage: everyone, everywhere

  • 2020 – Support Nurses and Midwives

Need for World Health Day

Today we all are concern about our health and lifestyle, but if we go several years back there was no such awareness, and people had to suffer terribly from chronic illnesses and diseases without even knowing the cause of it. This was when the World Health Organization took a step forward and considered these problems on a very serious note, WHO believed that nothing is more important than an individual’s health and life.

The need for World Health Day was felt owing to the increasing number of diseases and illnesses around the world. Every year, now and then, a new disease spring up and creates panic among people. To curb such epidemics, World Health Day highlights serious health issues and set a specific theme every year. Considering these themes, various activities and programs are organised on this day across the world to ensure that health care reaches to every human being.
