Music is a form of art whose medium is sound. When the soothing, healing and magical sounds come together, it becomes music. Music has many variants such a Vocal, Instrumental, Trans and many more. The Vocal techniques range from singing to rapping. A general definition of music includes elements such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics and texture.
The word music derived from the Greek word “Mousike” which means “art of the Muses”. Music is helpful in many ways. Excellent quality of music is that it is very soothing and helps you heal magically. To celebrate this fantastic art form (Music) and its beautiful followers (Musicians), World Music Day is celebrated on 21st June annually all around the world. World Music Day is also called Fete de la Musique, Make Music Day or International Music Day.
Who started World Music Day?
In the year 1981, the French Minister of Culture Jack Lang conceived this idea. Since then this day has been celebrated annually as world music day in many countries around the world.
World Music Day 2020 – History
On Jack Lang’s request, Maurice Fleuret became the Director of Music and Dance at the Ministry of Culture in October 1981. He applied his thoughts about music practice and its evolution. He called it out as ” the music everywhere and the concert nowhere”. He studied the cultural habits of Five million French people in the year 1982.
He analyzed that one young person out of two played some musical instrument. He started to dream about bringing this talent of the people out on the streets. As a result of this Fete de la Musique took place in Paris for the first time in the year 1982.
Before all this happened, This idea was conceived by American musician Joel Cohen who worked for a French radio station in the year 1970’s.
Ever since the first music festival in 1982, it has become an international phenomenon celebrated on the same day in many counties worldwide. This music festival is celebrated in close to 700 cities in 120 countries worldwide.
Some of the countries where this festival has found a great response are India, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, The United States and the UK.
What is the purpose of World Music Day 2020 Celebration?
The entire purpose of World Music Day is to promote music in two ways:
- Amateur and Professional musicians are encouraged to perform on the streets. The slogan used for this is “Make music” (“Faites de la musique”)
- Lots of free concerts are organized, making all kinds of music accessible to the public. Two essential things to be noted here are that all the concert are going to be held free of cost and the artists will perform in these concerts free of charge.
The most significant purpose of this international day is to make music accessible to people free of cost, thus encouraging them to learn and enjoy this art form.
World Music Day 2020 – Significance
The goal of World Music Day or Fete de la Musique is to provide as many free concerts as possible throughout the day. Musicians perform in public areas to show their love for music and thus encouraging many more young people to take part in such concerts. It is incredible to see these concerts on the streets and music played on the streets. It is a surreal experience.
In the United States itself, around 82 cities are participating in the activities of the World Music Day. All kinds of music are played, Classical, Pop, Jazz, Rap and Instrumental thus displaying the many variants in music. Around 130 countries worldwide take part in the activities of World Music Day. Free Concerts are staged on the streets of more than 1000 cities, making music easily accessible to the public.
There is nothing better in this world like the sound of your favourite song coming on. It immediately starts to heal the situation and makes you feel relaxed. In short World Music Day celebrates music in all its forms and the impact it has had on the human spirit!
World Music Day 2020 Celebration
Since the year of inception, The first Fete de la Musique held in the city of Paris, and it turned out to be a humongous success. The year 1985 was commended as the European year of music. In the year 1997, the European party of Music charter was signed in Budapest, encouraging countries outside Europe to join the World Music Day celebrations annually.
In India also there are several music concerts organized as a part of the World Music Day celebration. In India, music is a form of worship. There were many eminent poets and musicians that Indian history boasts off. In the year 2019, In India Exchange4Media and Loudest.in hosted an annual music conference, Music Inc. The theme for this year was “Music on the intersections.”
In the year 2019, the International Yoga Day also was celebrated on the same day as World Music day. Practice yoga with a beautiful melody in the background to achieve that tranquillity.
Both Amateur and professional music artists, stage the concerts on this day. So if you are a music enthusiast or a musician yourself, go all out there and soak in the essence of music. If you are unable to be a part of any of these concerts or music shows, turn up the volume of you tape recorder, gramophone, CD player or just the iPod and enjoy some old melodies or some new Rap. Whatever is the mood for that day soak into that music and celebrate the music day your way.
